So why not make a roof that stays put in all conditions and has a long life? The most important thing in installing a roof or changing one is the quality and type of ‘Shingles’ that you choose. This article gives you sufficient knowledge for the different types of Roofing Shingles available in the market. Read on and make the wise choice!
1. Asphalt shingles
Asphalt shingles are generally the most commonly used shingles and are relatively inexpensive. The life expectancy of Asphalt Shingles ranges from 20 years – 50 years. Modern asphalt shingles are made in many different colours and designs some of which replicate the look of wood shake, tile, and other types of roofing materials.
Asphalt Shingles do not do particularly well in climates that change drastically as these are prone to crack, break, or wear away. These are preferably meant for conditions that are always warm or even always cold.
2. Tile shingles
Tile shingles are known for their style. These have a unique appearance characteristic of the Southwest states and colonial Spanish architecture. Adorning the high-class style and sophistication, tile shingles are some of the most expensive to purchase and install. But these are one of the longest-lasting and durable materials in the market, lasting from 50-80 years. Some homes might not be able to structurally support the weight of tile shingles.
3. Metal roofs
Metal roofs are suitable mostly for homes that possess either flat or steep rooflines. Metal roofing ranges from solid metal to constructed metal shingles. Metal roofing can be very light on your pocket if you choose Low-end galvanized metal roofs, which can last up to 50 years. Metal roofs which were once popular in the Northwest and Rocky Mountain regions are paving their way into the Midwest and southern United States.
4. Wood shingles
Wood shingles are known for their aesthetic natural appearance. Choosing a hardwood, such as cedar or redwood, would make your roof last for at least 30 years and sometimes as long as 50 years if not subjected to harsh weather conditions. Wood Shingles require very little maintenance and are organic and eco-friendly. Also, these are much more energy efficient than asphalt shingles. Wood shingles are very durable and can resist hail, high winds or punctures.
Wood shingles cost more in material and in installation costs which can be a drawback and also can easily catch fire. These are also susceptible to termite damage or other insect problems.
5. Slate shingles
Slate Shingles are popular in the North-eastern portion of the United States, because the shingles are made from the slate which is quarried there. Slate shingles are unique in appearance and are extremely durable, with a life span of more than 50 years. Slate Shingles are amazing at resisting water absorption and so do very well in freezing temperatures. The price of Slate Shingles is much higher than the asphalt shingles and being heavy, these are not suitable for light structures.
