10 Bedroom Makeover Tips You Should Avoid

Posted on Kamis, 14 Juli 2016

With the Internet teeming with DIY projects and makeover instructions, it is easy to fall into the spiral of doing your own bedroom interiors based on your new favorite vlogger’s suggestion. Many DIY-ers first look online to try and find a voucher code to make savings and not have to pay the full price at those pesky brick and mortar stores. While this is a great way of saving money while sprucing up your personal space, most online DIY-ers are not trained professionals in interior design. The result is DIY projects that are often aesthetically attractive but are not purposeful.

This is a mistake you cannot afford to commit in your bedroom. Your bedroom’s interiors do not only affect its photographic quality; more seriously, it has effects on the quality AND quantity of sleep you get.

When you do decide to give your bedroom a make-over, make sure that each element is designed to make your bedroom relaxing, comforting, and conducive for a good night’s sleep. And the following bedroom makeover tips will create a bedroom the exact opposite of that:

1. Repainting your bedroom in bright, bold colors.
Bold, bright colors are best left off in the study or in the living room. These colors keep the mind awake and can get in the way of a good night’s sleep.

2. Cluttering the walls.
From motivational posters to oversized wall art to five years’ worth of photo prints, everyone is overdoing their wall designs. Keep it to a bare minimum otherwise it will just become clutter that will make your room noisy.

3. Making your bedroom a functional space for working or studying.
Having to put your study in the bedroom is impossible to avoid if you have limited home space but you should not forget to make the distinction between your space for work and space for rest. You don’t want to be sleepy while you’re working and you definitely don’t want to stay up thinking about work when you’re about to hit the sack. One easy solution is to keep the two spaces away from each other – position your furniture in such a way that you wouldn’t have to look at your bed while working and your desk is not in your line of vision from your bed. And don’t forget to de-clutter your desk to mute down head noises and make your room still conducive for rest.

4. Turning your bedroom into a functional exercise room.
Your oversized exercise equipment does not belong in the bedroom. It defeats the purpose of making your bedroom relaxing and conducive for restful sleep. Keep the exercise equipment in the living room if you’re that low on space but don’t compromise your bedroom’s comfort.

5. DIY-ing your wall texture jobs.
YoutubeVloggers make ‘sponging’ the wall paint look so terribly easy. In real life, it needs some level of skill and a certain degree of practice lest you’ll risk your most intimate space looking like a toddler’s drawing. You either practice on a smaller piece or leave this all-important job to experts.

6. Incorporating more natural light inside the bedroom.
While it’s okay to open up more space and allow more light into the bedroom, make sure that your bigger windows come with appropriate window treatments that will allow you some rest at night. Forget about DIY Roman blinds as well – you’ll need something to drown out the street lamps and noise outside and a thin piece of canvas fabric and wood will not do the job.

7. DIY-ing your lighting fixtures.
String lights, fairy lights, and hipster-vibe incandescent lights in different colors are not only non-functional; improperly installing them to get a certain ‘mood’ can be a risk for in terms of shocks and fires. Leave it to experts or stick to your bedroom’s original lighting layout.

8. Accessorizing your bedroom too much.
Do you really need another lamp by the door? Does the loveseat leave you room for you to walk from one end of the bed to the other? Do you really need to display that Spice Girls poster on your headboard? One too many DIY-ers are guilty of excessively accessorizing bedrooms making it look cluttered, stuffed, and generally uncomfortable. If you’re adding an accessory or new furnishing, make sure it fits in these two categories: (a) you have room for it, and (b) it serves a purpose. Otherwise, forget about it.

9. Oversized furnishings.
Like excessive decors, furnishings that are disproportionate to the size of your bedroom are an eyesore and makes your room feel claustrophobic. Mix and match the size of your bed, closet, dresser, and even rugs to each other, and in relative proportion to the size of the actual bedroom.

10. Matching too much.
Your bedroom is not a theme park to overload with similar decors. Learn about the art of compliments where you create compatible diversity in your design. Explore different styles and go to different stores. Just because you have a Hello Kitty clock does not mean you need a Hello Kitty mural and Hello Kitty dresser.
