At one stage or another, most of us will cast a cold eye around our home and realise it has become jaded. A full living room update, with new flooring, freshly painted walls, and new furniture, is the ideal home makeover.
However, limited time and budget can make going all out with a full revamp out of the question.
A few small changes can bring a whole new lease of life to the living space. And it doesn’t have to break the bank or take months to complete.
There’s no denying the transformative power of a fresh coat of paint. Accessories such as rugs, can really tie a room together. Adding a few pillows can make an old couch feel like new.
It’s the thoughtful details that make a big impact.
Gwen Kenny, Interior Designer at Divine Design: ‘’the least expensive update to a room is painting, you can change not only the look but also the feel of the room with paint."
‘’Wall coverings can add drama and texture and using a very expensive wallpaper sparingly can be a great way to update a room."
When it comes to furniture: ‘painting outdated wooden furniture, fireplaces and doors with modern and on trend colours is a great way to update on a budget".
Bringing a home back to life with a few small but effective updates can be easily done, even for those on the tightest of budgets.
Hallways can be transformed with eye-catching handles that make a door so attractive that it’ll be hard to avoid the entry invitation at every glance. Not every house is gifted with a large hall, so if space is scarce, double up on decorating by combining coat hooks and shelving.
The living room is often the room that people like to put the most effort into. But this could mean expense. Not with a few small changes that have a big impact. Sofa is looking a bit worse for wear but can’t scrape together the cash for a new one? No need to fear. Throws and blankets can be used to completely alter sofas. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different textures and colours. Walls looking a bit bare? Consider a feature wall in a muted shade to freshen up dated décor or add a large painting or mural.
As Gwen Kenny said painting outdated furniture is a great way to update on a budget. So why not do it wherever possible! Kitchen cabinets can be freshened up with a lick of paint. Do the same for dining table sets looking a bit tired. Take that a step further by adding some colourful cushions to the chairs to bring some welcome change.
The bedroom is our own individual sanctuary. Customising it to our every need and desire is what we love. But again, budget and time restrictions limit the amount we can do. However, a few simple tips and tricks is all that’s needed to give a bedroom a lift. Invest in new rugs and wall hangings as they bring new textures, colours and patterns into the bedroom. Want new lighting? Fairy lights are cute and budget friendly and be scattered around the room, bringing a nice sparkle at every corner.
When it comes to the bathroom think big mirrors, colourful soap containers and a brand new shower curtain. All three can be done cheaply and easily.
Redecorating the house can be something that people want to do but put it off because of the dreaded cost and time. But with the simple updates outlined, it’s possible to make the house like new without any major work. Set time aside one weekend when you’re really looking a change and a little update and begin your home transformation.
